The Wisconsin Teachers Protest: Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right

As school systems across the state of Wisconsin cancel another day of classes — the result of massive protests in Madison following Governor Scott Walker’s effort to strip educators of the bulk of their collective bargaining rights — I can’t help but think of the old adage that two wrongs don’t make a right.

    Dear Mr. Chaltain,

I would like to thank you for writing a very positive article! I am president of a small support staff ESP in northern Wisconsin. I am not for sure how much you know about this, but here are a few links that you might find interesting :

And there are other cities and counties that oppose this bill! Our school district and a lot of other school districts around us also oppose this bill! Our Superintendent does not see a need for them. While he doesn’t necessarily like unions, he knows that the union helps to safeguard the whole process and provide a way for problem resolution. He has been doing it for thirty plus years, and it works! I do agree with you that there is some restructuring that might help, but overall it is pretty good! If this bill goes through as the governor has it right now, our district will loose more than six teachers and possibly two administrators or more, including the Superintendent. That would equate to about five percent of our teachers. We may also loose some support staff as well.
It is good to see that someone in the media understands! I am so sick of the Fox propaganda machine! This is and never has been a money issue. We were ready to accept the monetary cuts back in December! What we will not do, is give up our rights!

I think when the Governor’s budget comes out, everyone will see, that the cuts we have to make, will end up becoming corporate welfare! This is an attach on unions, using the budget crisis as an excuse to break up our unions! I believe that it is a concerted effort by the Republicans to use the current economic times to attack us and take away our rights.

I only hope that CNN will keep speaking the truth and not be fooled by his rhetoric, smoke and mirrors.

    Thank You,

    Paul L. Anderson

  • Teachers all over the country have been contributing to their retirement and to their health benefits for years. These teachers have had a gravy train–no wonder the state is going broke. I would suspect that there are teachers out there who are losing, or have lost their jobs, who would love to take over for these teachers if they don’t want to work. They need to get with the real world. Everyone else contributes to their retirement and health benefits. Why do they think they are so special that they do not have to do this?
